David Myles Bennett is a Senior Fellow of the University of Melbourne Law School and Chairman of the university's Melbourne Law Masters Advisory Board Specialisation in Construction Law. In that post-graduate program he lectures in two subjects, Remedies in the Construction Context and Construction Contract Analysis and Drafting.
In 2012, on behalf of the Department of Justice, he was responsible for the drafting of a model building contract for new homes published by Consumer Affairs Victoria for public use. On 1 July 2013, he was appointed by Governor in Council as one of five Commissioners of the Victorian Building Authority, newly established by the Victorian government to regulate the Victorian building industry. He is also Chair of the Building Regulation Advisory Committee established under the Building Act 1993.
David is a former Adjunct Professor in Law at University of Technology, NSW ("UTS"). A founding board member of the UTS Centre for Dispute Resolution, David has trained in ADR and negotiation courses for UTS, LEADR, Victorian Bar, and for oil industry majors in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. In 1994 he was invited by the Cabinet Secretariat of Indonesia to conduct for its members and invitees a seminar on the potential use of ADR techniques in Indonesia. In 2004 he was engaged to provide a tour of seminars on construction law in Australian capitals and Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. He chaired a Standards Australia committee for the drafting of two its standard forms of contract.
David signed the Victorian Bar roll in 1964. In 1977 he was appointed a Queens' Counsel. At the Bar, he had a wide practice in Victoria and inter-State, specialising in major construction and infrastructure matters, defamation, commercial disputes and mediation. From 1983 until 1995, David practised in those areas as a partner of Freehills in Sydney before returning to the Bar in Melbourne. He retired from the Bar and legal practice in 2001.
David's roles in professional bodies include: Chairperson, former VPX Victorian electricity industry mediation panel; member, Vencorp and NECA mediation panels. He is a former member of the Victorian Civil Appeals Tribunal mediation panel. In 2001 he was President, Building Dispute Practitioners Society.
David's former civic involvements include: Treasurer and Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria; Chairperson, State Trust Corporation of Victoria; Chairperson, State Classification of Publications Board and board member, Biennale of Sydney.
From 1995 until 2007 David was a member of the Executive of the State Library of Victoria Foundation.
David's publications include Brooking on Building Contracts (2nd edition) and numerous articles and papers for professional journals and conferences. He has written various articles for Quadrant and other publications and, in 1999, was author of, and photographer for, a biography; "The Space I Am In". His book, "Cancer for Two" was published in 2006.
