COVID-19 and the Regulation of Work - 16 September 2020

The Australian Labour Law Association was pleased to present ‘COVID-19 and the Regulation of Work: Fast-tracking the Project of IR Reform?’ on 16 September 2020. The seminar presented by Professor Anthony Forsyth and chaired by Renee Burns considered COVID driven changes to awards and the Fair Work Act and asked what will be the longer-term impact of all these changes? Has the pandemic simply done the Coalition and business lobby’s work for them, instigating reductions in employment conditions, job security and work rights that would not otherwise have been attainable in Australia?

Victorian Chapter Seminar - Thursday 20 August 2020

ALLA hosted Emerita Professor Margaret Thornton in discussion with Dr Laura Hilly from the Victorian Bar and ALLA Secretary, Associate Professor Dominique Allen to celebrate the 30th birthday of Professor Thornton's classic text on anti-discrimination law 'The Liberal Promise'.

Panel Discussion - 04 June 2020

The Victorian Chapter of Australian Labour Law Association, together with the Australian Institute of Employment Rights, held a seminar on 24 April 2013 at the Monash University Law Chambers. Professor Keith Ewing, Professor of Public Law, King's College London and President of the Institute of Employment Rights, United Kingdom, addressed the topic "Life under a Coalition Government: Lessons from the UK".

Victorian Chapter Seminar - 25 March 2013

The Victorian Chapter of Australian Labour Law Association, together with Monash University Law School, held a seminar on 25 March 2013. The Hon Reg Hamilton, Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission, presented on the topic "A President's Term on Australia's National Employment Tribunal, 1997-2012". Between 1987 and 2012, the Australian award system was repeatedly reviewed and amended having regard to both equity and productivity and efficiency considerations. In addition, a new federal unfair dismissal jurisdiction was established. The Hon Reg Hamilton provided an overview of these changes and of one of the great reform periods in Australia's history.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 26 July 2012

The Victorian State Chapter will hold a seminar on Thursday 26 July 2012 at the offices of Ashurst Australia in Melbourne. Professor Tonia Novitz from the University of Bristol Law School will discuss the 'The Rise and Demise of Right to Strike'. Professor Novitz will draw on her recent research and will also address developments at the ILO and the context of European austerity measures.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 20 November 2007

Chris O'Grady addressed the topic Enforcement under WorkChoices. Drawing on his experiences in litigation involving enforcement under federal labour law, Chris O'Grady discussed the enforcement aspect of the operation of the WorkChoices legisation. Chris O'Grady has been a member of the Victorian Bar for over 15 years and has extensive experience in legal practice specialising in industrial relations, employment, discrimination, equal opportunity, as well as human rights and occupational health and safety.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 4 April 2007

Associate Professor Bill Hodge addressed the topic 'Bargaining in Good Faith: Lessons from the New Zealand Experience for Australia'. The operation of an overarching principle of good faith in employment relations in the Employment Relations Act 2000 (NZ) is of particular relevance to Australian Labour Law as many critics of the enterprise bargaining regime in the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) have argued that its effectiveness and fairness would be improved by the inclusion of such a duty.
