Victorian Chapter Seminar - Tuesday 17 November 2015

The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Labour Law Association, together with Monash University Centre of Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies held a seminar on the topic 'Living in a Right to Contract World: The Rise of American Individual Employment Arbitration'. The guest speaker was Professor Paul Secunda (Marquette Law School). Professor Marilyn Pittard chaired the seminar with concluding remarks from Mr Mark Rinaldi.

Victorian Chapter Seminar - 23 October 2013

The Victorian Chapter of Australian Labour Law Association, together with the Australian Institute of Employment Rights, held a seminar on 24 April 2013 at the Monash University Law Chambers. Professor Keith Ewing, Professor of Public Law, King's College London and President of the Institute of Employment Rights, United Kingdom, addressed the topic "Life under a Coalition Government: Lessons from the UK".

Victorian Chapter Seminar - 25 March 2013

The Victorian Chapter of Australian Labour Law Association, together with Monash University Law School, held a seminar on 25 March 2013. The Hon Reg Hamilton, Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission, presented on the topic "A President's Term on Australia's National Employment Tribunal, 1997-2012". Between 1987 and 2012, the Australian award system was repeatedly reviewed and amended having regard to both equity and productivity and efficiency considerations. In addition, a new federal unfair dismissal jurisdiction was established. The Hon Reg Hamilton provided an overview of these changes and of one of the great reform periods in Australia's history.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 26 July 2012

The Victorian State Chapter will hold a seminar on Thursday 26 July 2012 at the offices of Ashurst Australia in Melbourne. Professor Tonia Novitz from the University of Bristol Law School will discuss the 'The Rise and Demise of Right to Strike'. Professor Novitz will draw on her recent research and will also address developments at the ILO and the context of European austerity measures.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 16 June 2011

The Victorian State Chapter held a seminar on Thursday 16 June 2011 at 6pm in the Monash University Law Chambers, 472 Bourke Street, Melbourne, on issues in the new proposed Model Workplace Health and Safety legislation. The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Labour Law Association held a Panel Discussion 'From WorkChoices to Forward with Fairness: Reflections and Predictions' on Thursday 3 July.

The Panel featured Professor Andrew Stewart, John Bray Professor of Law, University of Adelaide and Legal Consultant, Piper Alderman, Dr Jill Murray, Senior Lecturer, School of Law, La Trobe University and Tess Hardy, Solicitor at Baker & McKenzie and was chaired by Professor Marilyn Pittard, Faculty of Law, Monash University and Consultant, Clayton Utz.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 20 November 2007

Chris O'Grady addressed the topic Enforcement under WorkChoices. Drawing on his experiences in litigation involving enforcement under federal labour law, Chris O'Grady discussed the enforcement aspect of the operation of the WorkChoices legisation. Chris O'Grady has been a member of the Victorian Bar for over 15 years and has extensive experience in legal practice specialising in industrial relations, employment, discrimination, equal opportunity, as well as human rights and occupational health and safety.

VIC Chapter Seminar - 4 April 2007

Associate Professor Bill Hodge addressed the topic 'Bargaining in Good Faith: Lessons from the New Zealand Experience for Australia'. The operation of an overarching principle of good faith in employment relations in the Employment Relations Act 2000 (NZ) is of particular relevance to Australian Labour Law as many critics of the enterprise bargaining regime in the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) have argued that its effectiveness and fairness would be improved by the inclusion of such a duty.

The Victorian Chapter held its final seminar for 2003, in conjunction with the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law (University of Melbourne) and the Monash University Law School, on 'Federalism and Labour Law: EU and Italian Systems'. Professor Franco Carinci, President of the Italian Association of Labour Rights and Social Security, was the main speaker.
