Join us for presentations by current Visiting Research Scholars from the Supreme Court of Japan and the Supreme Court of Korea, hosted by the Asian Law Centre at Melbourne Law School.

The Asian Law Centre’s Overseas Training and Research Program enables Judges and Prosecutors from the Supreme Courts of Japan and Korea to experience life in a jurisdiction outside their country for a 6-12 month period. It provides them with a valuable opportunity to study Australian law courses, access University resources and undertake research and training activities, including visits to Victorian courts and meetings with court personnel.

Judge Yoshihiro Baba is the 14th Visiting Research Scholar to visit the Melbourne Law School as part of the Supreme Court of Japan’s Overseas Training and Research Program. Judge Baba is an assistant judge from the Ichinomiya Branch of Nagoya District and Family Courts. During his stay, he has conducted research on the management of lawsuits which require expert knowledge and experience, such as malpractice lawsuits.

Judge Guksik Kim graduated from the Seoul National University in 2000 and was first appointed as a judge of the Busan District Court in 2007. Judge Kim has served at the Incheon District Court and Seoul Central District Court. He has interests in the rule of law and its failure in diverse areas.

Prosecutor Taegyoun Kim was admitted to the Korean National Bar in January 2006 after undertaking a training course at the Judicial Research and Training Institute at the Supreme Court in Korea, and was appointed as a public prosecutor in February in 2006. He is a Visiting Research Scholar at Melbourne Law School since 2016. He also holds Bachelor of Science in Engineering (1995) and Master of Science in Engineering (1997) from Seoul National University.

Prosecutor Kim has been posted to Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office between 2006 and 2008, Uiseong branch in Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office between 2008 and 2010, Inchen District Prosecutors’ Office between 2010 and 2012, Cheonan branch of Daegeon District Prosecutors’ Office between 2012 and 2014, and Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office since 2014. Prosecutor Kim’s current interest / research focuses on Child Abuse Crime and Terror Crime.
