Melbourne Law School will host an exclusive Alumni Seminar presented by Ms Elizabeth Kennedy (BA/LLB(Hons) 1975, LLM 1983, GradDipHealth&MedLaw 1997), General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, titled "Patient Centred Approaches to Treating and Caring for Cancer Patients".

About the Seminar:

It is a human right not to be subjected to medical or scientific experimentation or treatment – “without full free and informed consent”.

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is committed to consumer, carer and community participation appropriate to the diverse communities it treats and sees. This includes partnerships with consumers at both a strategic and operational level, as well as partnerships between patients and health professionals at an individual level.

In 1992 the High Court of Australia in the landmark case of Rogers v Whittaker emphasised patient autonomy, in making a decision about treatment, and rejected medical paternalism.

The law has influenced the way in which healthcare professionals ensure that patients are informed of their cancer diagnosis, about the care that is recommended, be that surgery, radiation oncology or chemotherapy, and the alternatives.

This presentation will discuss how Peter Mac strives to deliver cancer care that puts the patient at the centre of everything it does, and how its focus is on our patients, their families and carers, irrespective their point in the cancer journey.

About the Speaker:

Elizabeth Kennedy is currently General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre which is Australia’s only public health service solely dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education.

Until early 2014, Elizabeth was Corporate Counsel at Epworth HealthCare, a position she held for some four years, having been previously Corporate Counsel at The Royal Women’s Hospital for eight years, and prior to this Corporate Counsel of both the Royal Women’s and the Royal Children’s Hospitals from 2002.

The first half of her 40 year career as a lawyer was spent in law firms – she was a Consultant with Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper), and was a Partner of Darvall McCutcheon (which merged with Philips Fox in 1993).

She is Chair of the Appeals Committees of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Elizabeth specialises in health and medical law. She deals on a daily basis with a wide range of health professionals and hospitals and their issues. She has written many legal articles, and presented on many varied health and medical topics.
