  Historical Note: A graduate of the University of Melbourne and Harvard University, Ford was briefly employed in a private legal practice until he served in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve from 1939 to 1946, achieving the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. After the war, Ford returned to Australia and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Law at Melbourne in 1949, Robert Garran Professor of Law at the Australian National University in 1960 and, Professor of Commercial Law at Melbourne in 1962. During his career he published widely on the principles of law. Professor Ford retired from Melbourne University in 1984.
