Interdisciplinary Databases

The databases listed below are a selection of databases in disciplines other than law which are useful for interdisciplinary research. For a full list of the Library's databases, go to the A-Z Journal and Databases list via the catalogue. Here you can browse for databases by title or subject, or search for databases.

The list below is arranged alphabetically by topic.

Apart from the archival resources, the databases in the list are current - that is, they have up to date content.

Databases in the list have global/non-jurisdiction specific coverage, unless otherwise indicated.

In general, databases on the same platform (eg: EBSCO, GALE, PROQUEST, INFORMIT) can be searched together or individually.

All databases listed on this page are accessible to University of Melbourne staff and students only, unless indicated by the use of the term 'open access'.

ARCHIVAL / HISTORICAL RESEARCH

Primary Material

Archives Direct - a suite of collections from The National Archives, Kew - the UK government's official archive. Includes diplomatic correspondence, letters, reports, surveys, material from newspapers, statistical analyses, published pamphlets, ephemera, military papers, profiles of prominent individuals, maps and many other types of document. Archives Direct comprises the history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from the British state’s point of view.The University Library has access to the following Archives Direct collections:

British History Online (1300 to 1800) - contains primary and secondary sources for the history of the British Isles. Includes sources such as Parliament rolls of medieval England (Edward I to Henry VII); nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey maps; journals of the House of Lords and House of Commons; the Victoria County History of the counties of England; the Survey of London from English Heritage; calendars of state papers; letters, diaries and more.

Early English Books Online (1473 - 1700) - contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America, as well as works in English printed elsewhere.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (GALE) - contains every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in Great Britain during the eighteenth century, along with thousands of important works from the Americas. The collection is divided into seven subject areas: history and geography; social science and fine arts; medicine, science and technology; literature and language; religion and philosophy; law; reference.

European Views of the Americas: 1493-1750 - bibliographic database of European works written between 1493-1750 that relate to the Americas.

Nineteeth Century Collections Online (GALE) - primary source collections of over 100 types of primary source documents, including Books and monographs, Newspapers and periodicals, Diaries and personal letters, Manuscripts, Photographs, Pamphlets, Maps, Sheet music and more.

Making of the Modern World 1450-1914 (GALE) - documents the dynamics of Western trade and wealth that shaped the world from the last half of the 15th century into the beginning of the 20th century. It offers new ways of understanding the expansion of world trade, the Industrial Revolution and the development of modern capitalism. The collection provides full-text searching of an abundance of rare books and primary source materials, including Monographs, Serials, Political pamphlets and broadsides, Government publications, Proclamations, and a wide range of Ephemera.

South Asia Archive (Taylor & Francis) - fully searchable digital archive providing online access to documents ranging from the mid-18th to the mid-20th Century. The Archive contains both serial and non-serial materials, including reports, rare books, and journal runs from noteworthy, rare publications.

Historical Journal / Periodical Indexes

British Periodicals (1681 - 1939) - journal articles covering literature, philosophy, history, science, the fine arts, music, drama, archaeology and architecture and the social sciences.

Eighteenth Century Journals: a portal to Newspapers and Periodicals 1685-1835 - includes rare journals printed between c1685 and 1835, illuminating all aspects of eighteenth-century social, political and literary life. Many are ephemeral, lasting only for a handful of issues; others run for several years. Topics include colonial life; provincial and rural affairs; the French and American revolutions; reviews of literature and fashion throughout Europe; political debates; and London coffee house gossip and discussion.

19th Century Masterfile (Paratext) (1106 to 1930) - a platform of over 70 indexes to journal literature, newspapers, books, documents, art work and images, covering all subject areas. Includes:

19th Century UK Periodicals (GALE) - coverage of about 100 periodicals - covering all aspects of life in the UK in the 19th century, from women to sports and leisure, and from children to humour.

Periodicals Archive Online (Proquest) - backfiles of hundreds of scholarly periodical titles in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

ASIAN STUDIES

Bibliography of Asian Studies (EBSCO) (1971 to current) - indexing coverage of many important journals, particularly ones published in Asia, which are not indexed anywhere else. It also contains citations to English-language book chapters, conference proceedings and more. Covers all subjects, especially in the humanities and the social sciences, pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide.

East & South Asia Database (Proquest) - full-text academic journals locally published in various East Asian and South Asian countries.Covers major areas of study, including business, science, technology, engineering, social sciences, education and humanities.

Book Review Index Online

  • Comprehensive online guide to book reviews that includes more than five million review citations from thousands of publications, with linking to more than 630,000 full-text reviews. It supports research in numerous disciplines, including literature, history, education, psychology, and more. Contains the entire backfile of Book Review Index print content from 1965 to the present.

  • On publisher websites - depending on the publisher, webpages for books often have reviews.
  • In journal article databases. Most book review are written in journals, so looking for the title of the book in journal databases will often find reviews. On some platforms, such as EBSCO, you can restrict your search to book reviews only.

UlrichsWeb: Global Serials Directory

  • Detailed information on more than 300,000 periodicals of all types: academic and scholarly journals, e-journals, peer-reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and more. Ulrichsweb covers more than 900 subject areas. Ulrich's records provide data points such as ISSN, publisher, language, subject, abstracting & indexing coverage, full-text database coverage, tables of contents, and reviews written by librarians.

BUSINESS / ECONOMICS

Business Collection (INFORMIT) (1993 to current) - indexing and full text of Australian scholarly and professional journal articles. Covers all aspects of Australian business, including management, e-business, economics, commercial law, marketing and human resources.

Business Source Complete (EBSCO) (1886 to current) - indexing and abstracts for over 1,300 journal titles; many in full text.

EconLit (EBSCO) (1886 to current) - indexing and abstracts of journal articles from over 1000 journals, as well as books, theses, working papers, conference proceedings and book reviews.

Research Starters – Business (EBSCO) - provides business students with a solid foundation for their research and assignments, as well as overview information on topics relevant to their studies. Includes comprehensive summaries of discipline-specific topics and sources for advanced research. Articles average 3,000 words, providing concise yet more in-depth content than most textbook or encyclopedia entries.

Country Briefs (Australian Department of foreign Affairs and Trade - open access)

  • Information about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of almost 240 countries and economies.

CIA World Factbook (open access)

  • information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities. The Reference tab includes: maps of the major world regions, as well as Flags of the World, a Physical Map of the World, a Political Map of the World, a World Oceans map, and a Standard Time Zones of the World map.

Europa World Plus

  • Europa World Plus is the online version of the Europa World Year Book and the Regional Surveys of the World series. First published in 1926, the year book covers political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.

Criminal Justice Abstracts (EBSCO) - bibliographic records and abstracts of articles from hundreds of criminal justice and criminology journals.

Criminal Justice Collection (GALE) - bibliographic records and abstracts of articles from over 250 criminal justice and criminology journals.

Criminal Justice Database (Proquest) (1981 to current) - comprehensive database supporting research on crime, its causes and impacts, legal and social implications, as well as litigation and crime trends. As well as U.S. and international scholarly journals, it includes correctional and law enforcement trade publications, dissertations, crime reports, crime blogs and other material.

A+ Education (INFORMIT) AUSTRALIAN CONTENT (1978 to current for Index; 2000 to current for full text articles) - covers curriculum, educational research, information science, librarianship, management, policy administration, psychology, sociology, teaching and training.

Education Research Complete (EBSCO) - covers all levels of education from early childhood to higher education and all educational specialties. Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,400 journals, many in full text, as well as books, and conference papers.

Educational Administration Abstracts (EBSCO) - index of over 60,000 journal articles and other scholarship related to the administration of educational, including educational leadership, educational management, educational research.

ANR-Index (INFORMIT) -  AUSTRALIAN CONTENT - a bibliographic database with abstracts and full text for agriculture and natural resources, including sustainable Australian agriculture, food, forestry and fisheries industries and the promotion of conservation and sustainable use of Australia's environment, water and natural resources.

ENDANGER: Threatened Species in Australia: A Select Bibliography (INFORMIT) - bibliographic database that indexes published and unpublished material on Australian threatened flora and fauna and related topics.

Environmental Studies and Policy (GALE) - indexing, abstracting and full text from over 300 hundred journal titles covering all aspects of the environment, including science, agronomy, agriculture.

19th Century British Library Newspapers (GALE) - from the British Library. Includes  national and regional newspapers, as well as those from country or university towns and the manufacturing Midlands, as well as Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Google Newspapers Archive (open access)

  • Includes the scanned pages of thousands of worldwide newspapers. These can be browsed by paper and date, but not searched. The archive stopped adding content in 2011. Titles include:
    • The Age - (32,807 issues; from Oct 17 1854 - Dec 31 1989)
