NAIDOC week 2017
Melbourne Law School celebrated NAIDOC week with an event on Wednesday 5 July 2017 to mark the 25th anniversary of the landmark Mabo decision and the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum to amend the constitution to include Aboriginal people in the census and allow the Commonwealth to create laws for them.
The occasion was marked with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Diane Kerr and saw the launch of the first image installed as part of the Classroom Photo Mural Initiative. The image depicts the plaintiffs in the Mabo case with their legal counsel . The event was opened by MLS Deputy Dean Matthew Harding.
The Classroom Photo Mural Initiative uses the MLS building to present issues and images regarding Aboriginal sovereignty and legal frameworks in teaching and student spaces.
