Overview

Educated in Jakarta, Singapore, and Melbourne, Dr Benny Tabalujan holds a dual visiting appointment at the Melbourne Business School and Melbourne Law School, both at the University of Melbourne.

Prior to relocating to Australia in 2003, Benny was an award-winning associate professor in business law at the Nanyang Business School, Singapore. At NBS, he was deputy director of the Nanyang Fellows MBA, a collaborative offering of NBS and the MIT Sloan School of Management, Boston.

Earlier in his career, Benny was a lawyer with Minter Ellison and worked in Melbourne and Hong Kong. His practice focused on commercial and corporate law, acquisitions, intellectual property, and capital markets. He later consulted to a unit of international law firm Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills). From 2008-2014 he was a founding director of IKD Pty Ltd, a niche consultancy specialising in learning & development for lawyers.

Benny’s publications include Singapore Business Law (9th ed. 2021, original author and current lead editor), Indonesian Company Law: A Translation & Commentary (1996), and Leadership and Management Challenges of In-house Legal Counsel (ed, 2008). His academic interests encompass corporate and commercial law, legal team management, business ethics, and the intersection of law and religion.

Benny read economics and law at Monash University and gained his LLM and PhD at The University of Melbourne. He also has a Graduate Diploma in Divinity from the Australian College of Theology and a Master of Theology from the University of Glasgow. He is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia, as well as a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors.
