Damien is a barrister and mediator practicing at the Victorian Bar.
Dual qualified in law and accounting (Damien is a Chartered Tax Advisor and a Chartered Accountant) his areas of expertise include clean energy and emissions trading laws, income tax (including capital gains) and state taxes, property planning and environment laws and administrative law.
Before being called to the Bar, Damien was a partner in the leading legal and accounting firms of Ernst & Young, Baker & McKenzie and Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills).
Damien's experience spans more than 30 years and covers advice, structuring and litigation in planning and environmental, carbon, accounting and revenue law aspects of corporate business activities, property and project structuring and environmentally focused investments.
Damien is the author of Clean Energy Law in Australia (LexisNexis, 2012).
Damien is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law at Bond University, and the Director of Clean Energy Research in the Centre for Law, Governance and Public Policy. His current teaching portfolio includes Climate Change Law, Clean Energy Law, Environmental Legal Issues and International Environmental Law.
He has previously taught at the University of Melbourne as a Visiting Fellow in the post-graduate taxation program, and he was formerly a member of the Tax Advisory Board for the MLM. From time to time he is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand.
