Stephen Creese

Overview

Stephen Creese has an extensive background in international resources including Government relations, media, regulatory, M&A, legal and governance. This follows a career of over 33 years in the resources sector. Stephen was with the Rio Tinto Group for 29 years, including as General Counsel of Rio Tinto Limited for 13 years and then as Managing Director- Rio Tinto Australia. Stephen subsequently joined Newcrest Mining Limited where, immediately prior to his retirement in July 2013, he was the Executive General Manager–Corporate Affairs responsible for the government relations, media and community affairs functions.

Stephen is presently a member of an advisory board to the Office of Development Effectiveness within the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and a Senior Fellow of Melbourne Law School lecturing in International Minerals Law in the Melbourne Law Masters programme. He is Chair of the Advisory Board to Melbourne University Archives and a director of the Astra Chamber Music Society Inc. and also Melbourne Opera.

He was previously independent Chair of the National Employment Services Association from 2009 to February 2016, a member of the Australian Takeovers Panel from 2005-2014, a member of the Advisory Board to AusAID with respect to the “Mining for Development Programme” and a Board member of the Minerals Council of Australia.
