Vale Sir Ninian Stephen
Patron of the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law, 2003 -2017
The Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law (APCML) staff and members were saddened to hear about the passing of the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen KG AK GCMG GCVO KBE KStJ PC QC, aged 94. Sir Ninian held many eminent appointments during his long life including High Court Judge, Governor-General, international judge, and mediator. He also agreed very graciously to be the inaugural Patron of the APCML. He provided guidance to successive Directors and Associate Directors of the Centre, and took part in several Centre activities.
The Centre hosts an annual Sir Ninian Stephen Visiting Scholar, which was established in 2003 in honour of the APCML’s Patron. The purpose of the Visiting Scholar program is to bring a leading scholar or distinguished practitioner in the field of military law to the Centre every year to interact with the APCML’s military and academic nodes, as well as the University of Melbourne and the Department of Defence more broadly. The Visiting Scholar gives the annual Sir Ninian Stephen Lecture at Melbourne Law School. The Centre will continue to honour Sir Ninian’s life and contributions during future Sir Ninian Stephen Lectures.
We extend our condolences to Lady Stephen and her family.
