Developing human-centred explanations for decisions made using AI

Graduate Research Project

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in high-stakes decision-making, for example in sentencing, performance evaluation, and loan determinations. Many of these AI systems are considered to be 'black boxes'; their decision-making processes are hidden. This opacity makes it difficult to understand why a decision has been made, and consequently, to contest it in any meaningful way. My research focuses on how systems using AI can be designed to enable decision subjects to contest decisions that significantly impact them.
