Professor Michelle Welsh

Professor Michelle Welsh is the Senior Deputy Dean. Faculty Operations and the former Head of the Department of Business Law and Taxation at the Monash Business School.  Michelle is a Research Member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) and she undertakes research on the public enforcement of corporate law, the role of the public regulator and the impact of enforcement on corporate compliance.

Michelle’s PhD, for which she was awarded the Harold Luntz Thesis Prize for the Melbourne Law School’s best PhD Thesis of 2009, was supervised by Professor Ian Ramsay. She has undertaken a number of research projects with Professor Ramsay including an Australian Research Council funded three-year project titled ‘Phoenix Activity: Regulating Fraudulent Use of the Corporate Form'. Currently, she is a member of a Monash University Network of Excellence (NoE) project: “Enhancing Corporate Accountability” (with researchers from Monash Law School, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Manchester University). She is also working on a project that investigates optimal methods of regulating Debt Management Firms.
