Transforming Gender Equality through Islamic Education: A Critical Examination of the Sarjana Ulama Perempuan Indonesia (SUPI) Program's Curriculum and Pedagogy

This study examines how the educational curriculum and pedagogy in the Sarjana Ulama Perempuan Indonesia (SUPI) program enhance students' understanding and awareness of the importance of gender equality and justice in Islam. This program, aims to develop future female scholars, address gender inequality rooted in patriarchal norms by combining modern educational approaches with gender lens critical study of religious texts. Using a qualitative case study, this study highlights how Islamic higher education can promote gender equality, empower women, and challenge traditional culture. The results offer insights into transformative educational initiative as a means for social change in Indonesia and beyond.

Author’s biography

Muhamad Maulana is a Master of Art candidate in Education at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII), specializing in Educational Assessment and Evaluation. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Education from Bunga Bangsa Cirebon Islamic University, where he developed a deep interest in integrating traditional Islamic teachings with modern educational methodologies. His research focuses on inclusive and balanced approaches in Islamic education, with a particular emphasis on promoting Wasatiyyah (moderation). This interest began with his undergraduate thesis and continues through UIII research funding aimed at developing digital-based Wasatiyyah learning models.
