Dr Deborah Whitehall
Deborah Whitehall works at the interface of international law, political theory and human rights against the backdrop of events which expose the linkages between those fields. Most of these events precipitated or concur with the post-war progressions of international law and its humanist or social preoccupations after 1919 and again, after 1945. She is currently finalising her book manuscript on the humanist patterns orientating international law after 1945, The World to Come: Hannah Arendt and the Biopolitics of International Law (OUP forthcoming).
She was the Associate to the Hon. Justice SM Kiefel AC, a solicitor at King & Wood Mallesons, a principal solicitor at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office, a Lecturer of Law at Monash University and most recently a Lecturer of Law at the University of Sydney.
Her writing has been published or is forthcoming in the Modern Law Review, European Journal of International Law, Leiden Journal of International Law, London Review of International Law, Cambridge International Law Journal, and the Journal of the History of International Law.
In 2019, she presented her research at NYU, the LSE and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and she delivered the 2017 Cambridge International Law Journal – Lauterpacht Centre for International Law Annual Lecture. She is a graduate of the University of Queensland (BA(Hons I)/LLB(Hons I), the University of Oxford (BCL Distinction Human Rights) and the University of Melbourne (PhD Law).
