Workshop: Decentralisation in Papua New Guinea

10 November 2021

On 10 November 2021, CTN convenors Cheryl Saunders and Anna Dziedzic presented their preliminary report on Decentralized governance arrangements in Papua New Guinea to a gathering of government officials and academics in Port Moresby.

The project is part of a partnership with the National Research Institute of Papua New Guinea’s project on Autonomy and Decentralisation, which aims to facilitate a national conversation on the options for the effective decentralisation in Papua New Guinea.

The Constitution Transformation Network has partnered with the National Research Institute initially to prepare a report as a framework for the discussions in PNG, which identifies issues and options in the light of comparative experience.

At the meeting on 10 November 2021, CTN presented the issues and options set out in the preliminary report and received valuable insights and feedback from the National Research Institute, PNG scholars, the National Economic and Fiscal Commission and the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission, which will ensure the report covers all relevant issues in a way that will facilitate productive discussions in the future.

CTN is pleased to work with the National Research Institute on this new project, following our contribution to NRI’s Bougainville Referendum Research Project in 2019 and 2020.
