Under the supervision of Professor Tim Lindsey and Dr Jenny Beard, Tim will present his thesis titled 'Cause lawyering in an emerging democracy: the case of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (LBH)'.
This study explores the practice of cause lawyering in an emerging democracy through a case study of Indonesia and cause lawyers at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (Lembaga Bantuan Hukum, LBH). Under Indonesia’s authoritarian New Order, LBH was a prominent centre of reform activity. Cause lawyers at LBH defended political detainees, spoke out boldly against abuse of state power, and advanced notions of the rule of law and human rights in profoundly challenging circumstances. The far-reaching democratisation process that began in 1998 has involved remarkable changes for Indonesian state and society. Yet the impact of democratic transition on the practice of cause lawyering in Indonesia has yet to be examined in detail. This study will investigate the views and practices of cause lawyers at LBH and argue that although democratic transition can provide more opportunities for cause lawyering, transition also involves significant challenges and is no guarantee that cause lawyering will thrive.
