    Historical Note: Edward Woodward was born in 1928 and educated at Melbourne Grammar and the University of Melbourne. After graduating LLB, Woodward was admitted to the Bar in 1951, and became a QC in 1965. From the 1960s, Woodward was a member and presided over numerous public bodies including: Chairman of the Dried Fruits Board (1963–1972); president of the Victorian Association of Youth Clubs (1966–1976); member of the Victorian Bar Council (1969–1972); chairman of the Stevedoring Industrial Council. From 1972 to 1979 Woodward was Judge of the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Judge of the Australian Industrial Court and from 1972 to 1980, Judge of the Supreme Court, ACT. In the midst of this activity, Woodward was a Royal Commissioner to the Aboriginal Land Rights (1973–1974); president of the Trade practices Tribunal (1974–1976); Director General of Security (1976-1981). In 1977, Woodward was appointed Federal Court Judge until 1990 when he became Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

    Historical Note: This collection contains the records covering Sir Edward Woodward's involvment with the Stevedoring Industry from 1965 to 1972. Woodward was initally appointed by the Federal Government to conduct an inquiry into the industry, however this was soon overtaken by the establishment of the National Stevedoring Industry Conference, which he chaired from 1965 to 1970. The conference was then replaced by a statutory authority – the Stevedoring Industry Council, which Woodward chaired until he went on the bench in 1972.

Description:  Papers relate to Edward Woodward's work as Senior Counsel for the Yirrkala Aboriginal People in the Gove Land Rights Case (Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd in 1970-71). At the invitation of the Prime Minister, Mr. E G Whitlam, Justice Woodward conducted a Royal Commission into aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory. His first report was presented in July 1973 and recommended the establishment of Aboriginal Land Councils aimed at providing a united aboriginal voice for advice and advocacy in the Territory. A final report was presented in April 1974. The commission paved the way for the Northern Territory Land Rights Legislation which was enacted in 1976. He later acted as Chairman of the Aboriginal Justice Committee. The papers reflect these activities.
