Archival / Historical research
Primary Material
British History Online (1300 to 1800) - contains primary and secondary sources for the history of the British Isles. Includes sources such as Parliament rolls of medieval England (Edward I to Henry VII); nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey maps; journals of the House of Lords and House of Commons; the Victoria County History of the counties of England; the Survey of London from English Heritage; calendars of state papers; letters, diaries and more.
Early English Books Online (1473 - 1700) - contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America, as well as works in English printed elsewhere.
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (GALE) - contains every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in Great Britain during the eighteenth century, along with thousands of important works from the Americas. The collection is divided into seven subject areas: history and geography; social science and fine arts; medicine, science and technology; literature and language; religion and philosophy; law; reference.
European Views of the Americas: 1493-1750 - bibliographic database of European works written between 1493-1750 that relate to the Americas.
Nineteenth Century Collections Online (GALE) - primary source collections of over 100 types of primary source documents, including Books and monographs, Newspapers and periodicals, Diaries and personal letters, Manuscripts, Photographs, Pamphlets, Maps, Sheet music and more.
Making of the Modern World 1450-1914 (GALE) - documents the dynamics of Western trade and wealth that shaped the world from the last half of the 15th century into the beginning of the 20th century. It offers new ways of understanding the expansion of world trade, the Industrial Revolution and the development of modern capitalism. Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (EBSCO) - index of architecture and design academic and professional journal literature from the USA, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia.
Compendex (Elsevier) (1884 to current) - comprehensive bibliographic database of engineering research in the broad subject areas of engineering and applied science including: nuclear technology; bioengineering; transportation; chemical and process engineering; light and optical technology; agricultural engineering and food technology; computers and data processing; applied physics; electronics and communications control; civil, mechanical, materials, petroleum, aerospace, and automotive engineering.
Engineering Collection (INFORMIT) AUSTRALIAN CONTENT (1973 to current) - index and full text journals, conference proceedings and reports on civil engineering, mining, environmental engineering, road and rail, and municipal engineering.
Asian studies
BERITA - Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei/ASEAN Database (INFORMIT) (1990 to current)
This interdisciplinary bibliographic database indexes published and unpublished articles on Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, South-East Asia as a whole (when the three countries are included) and ASEAN.
Bibliography of Asian Studies (EBSCO) (1971 to current) - indexing coverage of many important journals, particularly ones published in Asia, which are not indexed anywhere else. It also contains citations to English-language book chapters, conference proceedings and more. Covers all subjects, especially in the humanities and the social sciences, pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide.
East & South Asia Database (Proquest) - full-text academic journals locally published in various East Asian and South Asian countries. Covers major areas of study, including business, science, technology, engineering, social sciences, education and humanities.

It supports research in numerous disciplines, including literature, history, education, psychology, and more. Contains the entire back file of Book Review Index print content from 1965 to the present.

In journal article databases. Most book review are written in journals, so looking for the title of the book in journal databases will often find reviews. On some platforms, such as EBSCO, you can restrict your search to book reviews only.

Ulrich's records provide data points such as ISSN, publisher, language, subject, abstracting & indexing coverage, full-text database coverage, tables of contents, and reviews written by librarians.

GreenFILE (EBSCO) (open access) - a collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles that cover all aspects of human impact to the environment, including climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and recycling.
IWA Publishing (International Water Association) - this database contains 15 journals as well as e-books on water, wastewater and related environmental fields, such as Journal of Water & Climate Change, Journal of Water & Health and Journal of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Development. Although this database is not a comprehensive index of journal literature, we include it because its journals are not indexed in the major indexing services such as Agricola.

EMBASE (Ovid) (1947 to current) - the Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals in the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation. There is selective coverage for nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology, and alternative medicine. The database is updated weekly.
Family Health Database (Proquest) - covers medical and consumer health journals and magazines.
Health and Medical Collection (Proquest) in-depth coverage of over 1,500 publications with almost 1,300 available in full text. Covers all major clinical and healthcare disciplines, including medical sciences, immunology, pharmacy, pharmacology, nursing, physical fitness and hygiene, surgery, consumer health and health administration.

- Includes newspapers, newswires, blogs, and news sites in full-text format. Full text access to the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal. US Newsstream also includes a large collection of local and regional newspapers.

Historical
19th Century British Library Newspapers (GALE) - from the British Library. Includes national and regional newspapers, as well as those from country or university towns and the manufacturing Midlands, as well as Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Google Newspapers Archive (open access)
- Includes the scanned pages of thousands of worldwide newspapers. These can be browsed by paper and date, but not searched. The archive stopped adding content in 2011. Titles include:
Proquest Historical Newspapers
- 21 individual newspapers and news collections, including The Guardian & The Observer (1791-2003), the Times of India (1838-2008), the New York Times (1851-2013), the Wall Street Journal (1889-2000), the Washington Post (1877-2000), the Jewish Advocate (1905-1990), and the Chinese Collection (1832-1953).
- The papers can be searched individually or together.

TROVE Digitised Newspapers - from the Australian National Library (open access)
- Includes scanned pages plus typed text for hundreds of Australian national, regional and local papers - from the 1800s onwards. This is an ongoing project and not yet complete, so it is currently better to search for older, rather than recent papers.

Directory of Australian Associations - guide to every association and interest group in Australia, including the non-profit sector. Information includes the aims, objectives, affiliations, publications, and membership information of each organisation, events and conferences and the names and contact details of leaders, officers, staff details, state branches, membership data, frequency of meetings and history. Philosophy Documentation Center E-Collection - index (with abstracts) of hundreds of philosophy and religion journals, all from the first volume of each journal. No full text available.
PhilPapers: Philosophical Research Online - an index and bibliography of philosophy journal articles, books, and open access archives. The index includes over two million entries. The bibliography categorises the entries into over 5000 topics.
Religion and Philosophy Collection (GALE) (1980 to current) - over 1 million articles from 200 academic journals and magazines on all aspects of religion and philosophy.
Politics / Public affairs / International relations
APA-FT: Australian Public Affairs Full Text (INFORMIT) (Indexed articles 1978 to current; full text 1995 to current) - selected scholarly articles on current affairs, economics, humanities, law, literature, politics and social sciences.
Political Science Database (Proquest) (1995 to current) - full text journal articles on international relations and political science.
UK Parliamentary Papers - includes Commons and Lords sessional papers from the 18th through to the 21st centuries (with supplementary material back to 1688); Hansard from 1803 to 2005; Peter Cockton's Subject Catalogue of the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1801-1900; Diplomatic and consular reports 1887-1916. Also includes Public Petitions to Parliament, 1833-1918, a collection of every petition accepted by parliament during this time, and enables the analysis of issues important to both the UK populace & Parliament.
Psychology / Behavioural sciences
PsychINFO (OVID) - indexing and abstracts of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations, and technical reports. Covers all aspects of the field of psychology and the psychological aspects of related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law. Includes the PsycARTICLES Journals database, which can be searched separately.
Psychology Database (Proquest) - abstracts and indexing of articles in more than 640 journals; over 540 in full text. Coverage includes behavioural, clinical, cognitive, developmental, experimental, industrial and social psychology, as well as personality, psychobiology and psychometrics.

It covers historical Islamic empires, and modern Islamic countries. Contains the equivalent of over 12,000 printed pages and thousands of articles on the Islamic world. Includes indexes of names and subjects as well as genealogical tables and maps. Searches possible in both English and Arabic
Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures (BRILL) - reference work reflecting the very latest research on gender studies and the Islamic world. Covers the fields of gender studies, Middle Eastern and Islamic studies.

SAGE Research Methods - a research methods tool which links SAGE’s book, journal and reference content with search and discovery tools. SCOPUS (1788 to current) - abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from over 5000 publishers. Includes scientific journals, books and conference proceedings in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology, health and medicine.
Science Database (Proquest) (1986 to current) - coverage of over 1030 journals; more than 760 in full text. All applied and general sciences topics covered, including general science, materials science, aerospace, engineering, computers, physics, telecommunications, transportation, and military.
Web of Science (1900 to current) - covers over 12,000 of the highest impact journals worldwide in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology, health and medicine, as well as over 150,000 conference proceedings. Includes scientific journals, books and conference proceedings

American Doctoral Dissertations (EBSCO Open Access) (1902 - current) - indexes thousands of theses and dissertations accepted by American universities and provides links to full text on open access databases, when available.
