Dr Amanda Whiting is a Lecturer and Associate Director (Malaysia) of the Asian Law Centre. Her research focusses on the area of human rights institutions and practices in the Asia-Pacific, gender and religion, Malaysian legal history and the role of lawyers as agents of civil society. Between 2009-2012, Amanda was the recipient of an Australian Research Council Post-doctoral Fellowship for the project ‘Lawyers, Civil Society and the State in Post-colonial Malaysia’. Arising from that research she is currently writing a history of the legal profession in Malaysia, focusing on its role as defender of the rule of law.
