About Me

I am Assistant Professor (BOF-TT) of Constitutional Law at Hasselt University. My primary research expertise is in human rights law, with focus on the ECHR, and comparative constitutional law, with focus on religious freedom. I am co-editor-in-chief of the Strasbourg Observers blog, co-editor-in-chief of the journal Tijdschrift voor Mensenrechten (Journal of Human Rights) and co-editor-in-chief of the website Tijd voor Mensenrechten (Time for Human Rights).  

My research has been published in, among others, Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Human Rights Law Review, American University International Law Review, and International and Comparative Law Quarterly. My published books include the monograph Resolving Conflicts between Human Rights: The Judge's Dilemma (Routledge 2017) and the edited volumes When Human Rights Clash at the European Court of Human Rights: Conflict or Harmony? (OUP 2017; with Eva Brems) and Migrants' Rights, Populism and Legal Resilience in Europe (CUP 2022; with Vladislava Stoyanova). Some of my work has been cited by the European Court of Human Rights, in separate opinions.

I am co-PI of the interuniversity research project (iBOF) Future-proofing human rights: developing thicker forms of accountability (2021-2025).
