MLS recognises student achievements

The law has the power to change our society and is far more dynamic and creative than many people understand, guest speaker Norman O'Bryan AM SC told those in attendance at the Melbourne Law School annual awards ceremony last night.

"The law is dynamic…and you learn something new every day," Mr O'Bryan said.

He urged students and recent graduates to "go get what you want".

"To thine own self be true," he said, quoting Shakespeare.

Mr O'Bryan (LLB 1980), an MLS alumnus and Supreme Court Prize winner, preceded an address by The Hon Justice Joseph Santamaria in which His Honour also proffered valuable advice to his audience; he said those in a fortunate position to study the law had an obligation to use that advantage to help others.

More than 130 current and former students received awards, with those in attendance presented with their awards by Dean Professor Carolyn Evans and their benefactors on the Wilson Hall stage.

Professor Evans said the ceremony was fitting recognition of the achievements of MLS students.

"I congratulate all students and recent graduates who received awards at the ceremony. Their achievements within the Law School will hopefully be a step towards success in their careers and lives in the future. My sincere thanks also to the many law firms, families and individuals who supported the scholarships and awards. It is their generosity that makes the awards possible," she said.

Among the winners were Douglas Porteous, who took home the Supreme Court Prize for the highest grade average for a graduating student, and Michael Allen, recipient of six awards.
