  • Executive Branch Research Lab (LAWS90258)

The Executive Branch Research Lab aims to foster innovative, practice-led JD legal research into the largest and most elusive branch of the constitutional order: the executive. Against a background of tuition in core concepts and practices relevant to study of the contemporary executive branch – including the political philosophies of the ‘welfare state’ and ‘neoliberalism’, the centrality of contracting to contemporary governmental practice, and how to understand the ideal of the rule of law in relation to different executive branch activities – the Research Lab will support enrolled students to acquire the academic and practical skills needed to pursue research on and analysis of the contemporary executive branch ‘in action’. Engaging closely with participating faculty, and working together on group projects, enrolled students will receive training to undertake such activities as making submissions to current parliamentary and law reform inquiries, writing blog entries on issues arising from current executive branch practices for the Research Lab’s dedicated website, conducting interviews with present and former ‘frontline’ executive branch actors with a view to intergenerational dialogue and learning, and participating in ongoing (year-to-year) research projects convened under the auspices of the Research Lab.

MLM electives

Timely applications for 2024 JD MLM electives will open during the late re-enrolment period (12 December 2023 to 12 January 2024).

JD students may apply to study up to 25 credit points (usually two subjects) of Melbourne Law Masters (MLM) subjects from the approved list as electives during their course.

JD students must confirm, via the subject's Handbook, that the teaching dates and assessment due dates of their nominated MLM electives do not result in clashes with their JD commitments, as well as confirming that they meet any subject prerequisites before applying.

Note: Any overlap or clash between the assessment and/or teaching dates of your MLM elective enrolment and your enrolment[s] in the JD program will not constitute grounds for special consideration. Students must check the teaching and assessment dates for each MLM elective enrolment and manage their timetable and assessment accordingly.

Places for JD students within each approved MLM elective are limited, and priority will be given to MLM students.

All MLM elective applications are subject to a selection process which will take place after the close of timely applications. The Law Academic Support Office will perform the selection process and assist these students with amending their enrolment. Class registration is not required for MLM electives.

Students whose JD MLM Elective application is not successful will have their details added to the waitlist, however, priority will be given to MLM students.

2024 MLM elective applications

Submitting an application does not guarantee enrolment in an MLM elective. MLM students have priority for enrolment.

Timely applications for 2024 will open 9.00 am on 12 December 2023 and close 11.59 pm on 12 January 2024. Applications will be subject to a randomised selection round. In the case of students submitting multiple applications, only the latest application will be assessed.
