Course Structure

The course structures below are for students commencing the JD from 2018 onward.

Standard 3 Year Course Structure

The standard three-year course format enables students to take advantage of other educational, professional and social opportunities during the summer and winter breaks, including seasonal clerkships, international exchanges, internships, mooting and Law Review editorial work.

^ This subject will be offered alternatively as an intensive during July.

* This subject will be offered alternatively as an intensive during December. Assessment dates will be available to students via the Assessment Schedule on the JD LMS Community. Places are quota restricted. Students can enrol into this offering on a first-in basis, based on their date/time of enrolling into the subject. Please note that Legal Theory is required as a prerequisite for various subjects in second year. If you do not enrol in Legal Theory in Year 1, then you will be moving to the extended three and a half year course plan or the four year course plan and will need to contact the Assistant Dean – Teaching and Learning (jmarychurch@unimelb.edu.au) prior to enrolling in second year subjects.


Extended 3.5 Year Course Structure

This format enables students to take advantage of other educational, professional and social opportunities during the summer and winter breaks, including seasonal clerkships, international exchanges, internships, mooting and Law Review editorial work.

^ This subject will be offered alternatively as an intensive during July.

# To complete in 3.5 years, this elective will need to be undertaken in Semester 1 (4th year), Winter (4th year), in an earlier semester or as an earlier intensive in Winter, November or Summer.


Extended 4 Year Course Structure

This format enables students to take advantage of other educational, professional and social opportunities during the summer and winter breaks, including seasonal clerkships, international exchanges, internships, mooting and Law Review editorial work.

* This subject will be offered alternatively as an intensive during December.


Accelerated 2.5 Year Course Structure

The Melbourne JD can also be accelerated by students with outstanding results with approval from the Law School. While students are encouraged to take advantage of other educational, professional and social opportunities, the ability to participate in all of these possibilities will be limited due to the accelerated nature of this course plan.
