This scholarship was established by Charles-Lim Capital Limited to support students commencing the three-year Juris Doctor (JD) degree at Melbourne Law School.
The Scholarship is intended to support Asian students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds enrolling in the Melbourne Law School’s three-year Juris Doctor degree, and to help ensure that family and financial circumstances are less of a barrier to success. In addition to financial support, successful applicants will be provided with opportunities to gain a broader understanding and first-hand experience of Asian and Australian affairs and legal issues through mentoring, internships and extra-curricular opportunities.
The vision of the Law School and the scholarship’s supporters is that through their world-class legal training and wider perspective of the world, Asia and Australia, future scholars will become leaders and advocates in their communities and will play an important role in fostering closer relationships between Australia and its Asian neighbours.
Eligibility is limited to applicants who are commencing the MLS Juris Doctor (JD) program and are citizens of the following countries (this list may be amended from time to time by the Dean of Melbourne Law School):
Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Mainland China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia are not eligible.
To be eligible for consideration applicants must be selected into the MLS Juris Doctor program through the usual admissions requirements. Scholarship selection will be based on financial need along with evidence of actual and future leadership potential, and commitment to the community and/or furthering relations between Australia and Asia.
The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean following consultation with the Melbourne Law School Scholarships Committee.
One scholarship will be awarded to a student commencing the Melbourne JD (Juris Doctor) Program in 2019.
The value of the scholarship is $25,000 AUD per year for three years, for a total of $75,000 AUD.
How to apply
Applicants must firstly have submitted an application for the Juris Doctor by the application deadline of 2 November for commencement the following year. Applicants who wish to be considered for this scholarship must also complete the scholarship application by the 2 December.
