Melbourne Law School will host an exclusive Alumni Seminar presented by Ms Elizabeth Kennedy (BA/LLB(Hons) 1975, LLM 1983, GradDipHealth&MedLaw 1997), General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, titled "Patient Centred Approaches to Treating and Caring for Cancer Patients".
About the Seminar:
It is a human right not to be subjected to medical or scientific experimentation or treatment – “without full free and informed consent”.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is committed to consumer, carer and community participation appropriate to the diverse communities it treats and sees. This includes partnerships with consumers at both a strategic and operational level, as well as partnerships between patients and health professionals at an individual level.
In 1992 the High Court of Australia in the landmark case of Rogers v Whittaker emphasised patient autonomy, in making a decision about treatment, and rejected medical paternalism.
The law has influenced the way in which healthcare professionals ensure that patients are informed of their cancer diagnosis, about the care that is recommended, be that surgery, radiation oncology or chemotherapy, and the alternatives.
This presentation will discuss how Peter Mac strives to deliver cancer care that puts the patient at the centre of everything it does, and how its focus is on our patients, their families and carers, irrespective their point in the cancer journey.
About the Speaker:
Elizabeth Kennedy is currently General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre which is Australia’s only public health service solely dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education.
