The Office for Research is an administrative unit of Melbourne Law School that supports the Associate Dean (Research) and the Faculty Research and Law Library Committee

The Office for Research is responsible for the strategic and operational management of research at the faculty level and provides expertise and support services to staff and graduate researchers across the following five domains:

  2. Research Development and Funding
  3. Graduate Research Degree Program
  4. Research Centre Support, Planning and Reporting

    Associate Dean, Research (ADR) provides academic guidance on research and research training in the Law School.

    ADR works closely with the Director, Research & Industry, Director of Graduate Research and the Office for Research to ensure Melbourne Law School's research planning and goals are reached.

    ADR is also responsible for providing academic assistance to staff preparing research grants, together with grant mentors Professor Sarah Biddulph, Professor Hilary Charlesworth, and Professor Andrew Kenyon.

    The Director of Graduate Research (DGR) provides academic guidance on graduate research candidature in the Law School.

    The DGR works closely with the Office for Research, and with the Graduate Research Co-ordinators to ensure that the MLS Graduate Research Degree program assists candidates to reach their research goals.

    Madeline oversees the strategic planning and management of research activities within Melbourne Law School. She is responsible for the MLS Research & Industry portfolio including the Office for Research, the Academic Research Service and the MLS Research Centres.

    Angela coordinates the delivery of high quality research and engagement support services for Law School academic staff along with Melbourne Law School's Research Centres, Institutes, Networks and Groups and academic researchers. A key aspect is the responsibility of line management and support of the MLS Research Centre Administrator and Research Administrator team.

    Angela also provides expertise and advice on the following:

    • Coordination of copyright permissions for academic staff for Open Access and uploading of papers to University's Open Access Repository and compliance with ARC Open Access policy.
    • Statistics and reporting related to published research outputs and Open Access
    • Promotion of academic papers on SSRN and AustLII
    • Maintaining the Research, Graduate Research Degree and Staff Profile sections of the Law School's web site
    • Maintaining Research Centre, Institute, Groups, Network and Program web sites

    Angela also manages nominations for the annual Harold Luntz Graduate Research Thesis prize, the Chancellor's Prize for Excellence in the PhD and the Melbourne Law School's Student Published Research Prize.

    • Identification and targeted promotion of domestic and international research funding opportunities (including Category 2-4), increasing research activity and supporting research excellence

    • Drafting proposals or business plans
    • Preparation of research contracts and project budgets
    • Post-award matters for research grants and contracts
    • Grant, award and fellowship applications for academic staff and graduate researchers
    • General advice on research funding schemes, submission guidelines and application deadlines

    Laura coordinates the Law School's admissions and scholarships process for entry into the Graduate Research Degree program. She also manages the Graduate Research Degree supervisor training and registration and the Exchange/Study Abroad applications for visiting graduate researchers.

The Research Administrators provide support to the Research & Industry portfolio under the directive from the Manager, Research Impact and Support.

MLS Academic Research Service

MLS Academic Research Service (formerly Law Research Service) supports the research and publication effort of Melbourne Law School (MLS) by providing comprehensive research to support MLS academic staff.
