Overview
Colin Fenwick is a graduate in Arts and Law of the University of Melbourne, and of the University of Virginia in Law. His, academic interests are in comparative, international and Australian employment and labour law. He has worked in the field of labour law in Australia, Switzerland and the United States, as an academic, an advocate, a practitioner (both nationally and internationally) and a researcher. Among other things, he served as counsel for the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in the proceedings of the ILO Commission of Inquiry into Forced Labour in Myanmar.
In his research to date, Colin has examined changes to Australian labour laws, the application of international labour law to the work of prisoners, the role of labour law in promoting small enterprise development, the regulation of retirement payments to company directors, international law protecting the fundamental human rights of workers, the relationship of labour law to the promotion of economic development, and the role of labour law in promoting innovation.
At present, Colin is working as a Labour Law Specialist at the International Labour Office in Geneva, Switzerland. There he is engaged in providing advice on major labour law reforms in a number of developing economies, as well as in research that focuses on the role of labour regulation (broadly understood) in promoting economic development.
Colin served as Director of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law from 2004 to 2008, as joint Editor of the Australian Journal of Labour Law from 2006 to 2008, and as Associate Editor of that journal from 2000 to 2005. From 2004 to 2008 Colin also worked (part time) with Minter Ellison Lawyers, Melbourne.
