Overview

Khatina is the Managing Partner of EconWorks, a Malaysian boutique advisory firm focusing on competition and international economics matters, and a Senior Fellow of the Melbourne Law School. She was recently an Advisory Consultant to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM), where she was the Director of Economics from 2016 to 2021. She was previously a member of the Economics Committee at the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) and the economic adviser to the Malaysia Energy Commission.

Khatina has nearly thirty years’ experience as an economist working in the areas of macroeconomics, international trade, economic regulation, and competition economics, as well as corporate and investment strategies, and public policy. She has worked in and advised various organizations in Malaysia and ASEAN, including a family business group, competition and regulatory authorities, a public research institute, a sovereign wealth fund, the government, and an international investment bank, among others.

Khatina is especially passionate and interested in the development of competition policy and law in Malaysia. She was part of a five-member Working Group to develop, draft, and introduce the competition policy (Fair Trade Practice Policy) and subsequently, the Competition Act 2010 and Competition Commission Act 2010. The policy was approved by the Malaysian Cabinet in October 2005 and the law was passed by the Parliament in April 2010. Later, as MAVCOM’s Director of Economics, she headed the Competition Team and worked on the competition-related guidelines for the sector regulator.

Khatina graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Asian Economies and Economics History) from the University of Melbourne, and possesses a Master in Global Competition and Consumer Law from Melbourne Law School, Australia; Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Melbourne Business School, Australia; Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from Harvard University, USA; Master of Arts (MA) degree in Economics for Competition Law and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Competition Law from King’s College London, United Kingdom.
