Seed Funding 2021: Pervasive Devices
What does it mean to be constantly under the scrutiny of digital technology?
Brief
What does it mean to have our devices always in our pockets? Or a fitbit around our wrists? Or tracking us while we work? How is pervasive technology shaping our lives?
The technology we use on a daily basis impacts us in many ways. Cross-disciplinary research allows for a better understanding, not just of how these devices work but also what that means for people living in an increasingly connected world. COVID19 increased the need for digital connectivity exponentially, the technology already existed but its meaning changed drastically. How do our devices impact us now they are the primary point of contact to our workplaces? To our families and friends? What changes have been made to these devices to increase our access to each other when we have been ordered to stay apart? How do they monitor us and what does that mean for our social and work lives?
CAIDE is calling for EOIs on the topic of Pervasive Devices from cross-disciplinary teams from across the University of Melbourne.
Funding opportunity
CAIDE is looking to advance cross-disciplinary research by providing seed funding for 2 or 3 projects focusing on pervasive devices. The program is designed to develop research ideas and nurture new collaborations across the University to build research capacity and capability in the emerging area of digital ethics. Under this funding, research teams must be cross-disciplinary and including researchers from two CAIDEmember faculties – Faculties of Science, Arts, Engineering and IT and the Melbourne Law School. External researchers or researchers from other faculties are able to apply, if they are joining a team with researchers from CAIDE member faculties. Seed funded projects will apply for a larger competitive grant.
Applicant are eligible for funding of up to $20,000 AUD.
