Flos Greig Annual Lecture in Law

Portrait of Flos Greig

Flos Greig, the first Australian woman to be admitted to legal practice and a Melbourne Law School alumna, was a pioneer whose determination to practice as a solicitor advanced gender equality in the legal profession in Australia in the early twentieth century.

To celebrate the achievements of Greig, Melbourne Law School is honoured to establish the annual Flos Greig Lecture, presented in partnership with Cornwalls. Upon graduating from Melbourne Law School in 1903, Greig undertook her articles with Frank Cornwall, later continuing her career with Cornwalls. Cornwalls' involvement in this new lecture series recognises Greig’s tenacious spirit which transformed the basis of admission to the Australian legal profession.

The inaugural lecture on 19 August 2022 is presented by Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp titled The new wave of women in politics: Extraordinary women shaping the future, exploring the rise of female voices in Australian politics and leadership.

Our ambition is to establish this lecture in the long term through philanthropic support, and we warmly invite gifts of any size to make this possible.
