Dr Reyvi Mariñas

Dr Reyvi Mariñas currently serves in the Editorial Committee of the Australian Journal of Asian Law. His academic interests span in the areas of law, political theory, migration and diaspora studies, citizenship studies and refugee protection.
In 2019, he completed his PhD thesis at Monash University Law School, entitled ‘Conscious Citizenship: The Political Activism of the Filipino Diaspora in Australia Through the Lens of Hannah Arendt’.
From 2020 to 2024, Reyvi served as a Research Fellow on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project 180100685 Indonesia’s refugee policies: responsibility, security and regionalism at Melbourne Law School. During his fellowship, he co-authored and co-edited the book Refugee Protection in Southeast Asia: Between Humanitarianism and Sovereignty (Berghahn Books, 2024), which examines regional approaches to refugee governance and protection.
Reyvi is also the author of two chapters on ‘Migration and Refugee Law’ and ‘Citizenship and Immigration Law’ in the Philippines, to be published in the Elgar Encyclopedia of Asian Law edited by Sarah Biddulph and Kathryn Taylor (Edward Elgar, 2026).
He is the Co-Chairperson of Philippines-Australia Solidarity Association (PASA) and the Vice-Chairperson of the Welfare Mission for Migrants (WMM), a not-for-profit community organisation based in Melbourne that provides support to vulnerable migrants and their families.
In addition to his academic roles, Reyvi practices as an immigration lawyer at Marinas Joshi Lawyers, working in areas that include migration and refugee law, administrative law, and human rights-related legal practices.
