In this podcast, Earn Asanasak talks to Rafiqa Qurrata A’yun about her recent book, “Law and Politics of Blasphemy in Indonesia: The Sacred, the State and the Ballot Box,” based on her PhD thesis at Melbourne Law School. The book examines Indonesia’s illiberal legal framework, where laws favouring religious orthodoxy are often exploited for religious and political mobilisations, a topic that is particularly relevant for understanding Indonesia, a nation where Islam is the majority religion and where conservatism among followers has increased in recent decades.
Rafiqa Qurrata A’yun is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia and an associate at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS) at Melbourne Law School. She is also a senior researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Law and Economics (CIRCLE) at Universitas Indonesia and the 2025-2026 Mellon/Scholars at Risk Academic Freedom Fellow.
