The Centre for Employment and Labour Law and Disability Law Network co-hosted a special lecture by Professor Lisa B Waddington, a Professor in European Disability Law, and International and European Law at Maastricht University.

This presentation explored:

  • Legal implications of the CRPD for universities with regard to employment of staff with disability, and how they can go about meeting those obligations.
  • Employment obligations set out in the CRPD, and a discussion of the recent guidance given by the UN Committee linked to the Convention in the form of General Comment No 8.
  • A Dutch judgment in which disability discrimination against a university academic was found to have occurred.
  • Common elements of disability discrimination experienced by staff.
  • Real-life examples of university good practice, regarding the employment of staff with disability.

Professor Waddington holds the European Disability Forum Chair in European Disability Law. Her principal area of interest lies in European and comparative disability law, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), and European and comparative equity law in general.
