Dr Daniel Peterson

CILIS Associate
Daniel is a scholar of law and geopolitics focusing on Indonesia, human rights, and Indo-Pacific security. He is the author of Islam, Blasphemy, and Human Rights in Indonesia: The Trial of Ahok (Routledge, 2020), and has published in leading academic journals. He is a former principal contributor to SHARIAsource at Harvard Law School.
He is currently a lecturer at École normale normale supérieure de Rennes, where he designed and teaches a postgraduate course, Lawfare in Indonesia. He previously lectured in Southeast Asian politics at Queen Mary, University of London (2023–24) and taught Political Islam and International Politics at King’s College London (2022–23).
He has advised US law firms on Southeast Asian geopolitical dynamics and contributed research and policy briefs for the Australian Department of Defence and the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI). He is a fluent Indonesian speaker and an Associate of the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society.
