Islamic Law Approach to Protection of Rights of Insurgency-Induced Internally Displaced Persons in North-east, Nigeria

Many people were displaced as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in North-east, Nigeria. The problem of internally displaced persons (IDPs) continues unabated and there is no provision in Nigerian law that specifically caters for IDPs. However, Islamic law has a mechanism for enforceability of rights of IDPs. This qualitative study analyses the Islamic law approach to the protection of the rights of insurgency-induced IDPs in North-east; Nigeria. It concludes that Islamic law abhors insurgency and recommends that there should be legal provisions introduced in Nigerian law that would cater for the IDPs in the way proposed by Islamic law.
