Overview
Ary Hermawan is an Indonesian researcher and columnist with over 20 years of experience writing about Indonesian politics and society. He is the current editor of the Indonesia at Melbourne blog and an Associate Director at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS). He is also a visiting fellow at the Regional Social and Cultural Studies (RSCS) at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore.
Ary earned a PhD in Asian Studies from the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute, a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Arizona’s School of Journalism, and a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic History from the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University. He previously worked as a managing editor and editor-at-large for Indonesia’s leading English daily, The Jakarta Post. He is also a co-founder of the public journalism initiative Project Multatuli and a former deputy director of Amnesty International Indonesia.
His research interests include the politics of digital and artificial intelligence governance, media and journalism, political Islam, human rights, and civil society activism. His scholarly articles and op-eds have been published in various outlets, including the Journal of Contemporary Asia, Critical Asian Studies, Melbourne Asia Review, Indonesia at Melbourne, New Mandala, The Jakarta Post, Fulcrum, The Conversation Indonesia, Project Multatuli, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
