The Advisory Opinion Requests on Climate Change Obligations: Systemic integration of which common intentions?

Wednesday 13th March, 2024

Professor Margaret Young led this seminar, intended to stimulate a conversation, about the advisory opinions on climate change obligations currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Professor Young’s analysis is informed by her work on an ARC Discovery Project on ‘The Potential and Limits of International Adjudication’. The seminar examined the potential for integration of treaty and custom by the courts, including with respect to obligations from the Paris Agreement, multilateral environment agreements, human rights and the law of the sea.
