“No Cash—Card Only”: Money as a Matter of Property and Contract

On 22 July 2024, the Obligations Group hosted a lunchtime seminar titled '"No Cash - Card Only": Money as a Matter of Property and Contract', presented by Professor James Penner (University of Singapore).

Money, as a kind of legal thing, sits on the borderline between property and contract. In this seminar Professor James Penner discussed the nature of money, in particular its dependence on the notion of credit, the role of commercial banks in creating money, and the possible consequences of the dematerialisation of money, the abolition of coins and banknotes, i.e that all money will go ‘electronic’.
