Fiduciaries in the United Kingdom Supreme Court
On 14 August 2025, the Obligations Group hosted a lecture titled 'Fiduciaries in the United Kingdom Supreme Court', presented by Professors James Lee (King's College London) and Man Yip (Singapore Management University).
In this lecture, James Lee and Man Yip critically examined the English decision of Hopcraft v Close Brothers Limited [2025] UKSC 33 from 1st August. This is a high-profile judgment on undisclosed car finance commissions where the Supreme Court present a specific and controversial view of fiduciary duties. The decision is the latest in a line of recent judgments of the UK Supreme Court on equity in the commercial context that have significant implications for the future directions of the law.

About the Speakers
James Lee is a Senior Fellow on the Melbourne Law Masters and Professor of English Law at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London. He is an Academic Bencher of the Inner Temple, one of the General Editors of Legal Studies and, with Jamie Glister, Co-Editor of Hanbury and Martin’s Modern Equity.
Man Yip is a Professor of Law and the V3 Group Professor in Family Entrepreneurship at Singapore Management University (SMU), Yong Pung How School of Law. Her research interests are in private law with focus on equity & trusts, international commercial courts and private international law.
