Being a graduate here means I have opportunities I literally never thought were possible. That's something I'll always hold very close to my heart.
Bronte didn't grow up imagining herself at one of Australia's top law schools. She left high school, went on to raise three children, built a career, and completed an undergraduate degree in commerce, all before law ever entered the picture. It was a conversation with a friend studying criminology that first inspired her.
"I honestly had never considered that law would ever be a possibility for me," she says.
That unassuming beginning belies the conviction she now brings to her studies. For Bronte, law has always been about more than a career shift. Having known what it feels like to be without a voice, she came to Melbourne Law School with a clear purpose: to advocate for people who need someone in their corner.
Balancing part-time study with work and parenting three kids, Bronte has navigated the JD on her own terms by picking up intensive electives, managing her load semester by semester, and finding her routine over six years. It is, she's quick to acknowledge, demanding by design.
I think you would only do the Juris Doctor if your heart was in it. I don't think anyone could actually do it if they didn't want to be here.
What has surprised her most is how much the experience has broadened her. She arrived certain she would go into corporate law. Now, having been exposed to everything from personal injury litigation to Indigenous property law to the Law Apps subject, in which her cohort built AI-powered tools to promote access to justice, she finds herself far less sure of the destination, and far more interested in the journey.
The community, she says, has been the unexpected heart of it all. Peers who juggle families, careers and big ambitions. Academics who have written the very textbooks on the shelves. Practitioners who walk in and teach from the courtroom floor. It is a combination, she says, that is simply hard to find anywhere else.
"When you're being taught by the people who have written the textbook, there's a depth of knowledge and passion behind everything they say that just makes it an entirely different experience. It feels like a privilege."
Her advice to anyone considering the degree is characteristically direct: sign up for things even when you're nervous, sit in the front row, say hello to the person beside you.
"Make friends, because they are people you will remember for a lifetime. And remember why you're here — because when it gets tough, and it will, that's what carries you through."
Bronte plans to join the bar as a barrister. But more than any particular destination, she hopes to use what she has built here to show others - especially those who, like her, never thought this world was for them - that it can be.
