Kamaka Martin | Juris Doctor

We caught up with JD alum Kamaka Martin, who graduated in 2009, to hear about her time at Melbourne Law School and all she’s accomplished since then.

Kamaka, who is American, first came to the University of Melbourne as an undergraduate on a semester abroad. Her exceptional experience inspired her to return to Melbourne for law school.

“I was thrilled to find out that the Melbourne JD is recognized by the American Bar Association, which meant that I could sit for either the New York or California bar exam without taking a bridging course.”

Kamaka’s JD experience at Melbourne was “rigorous and rewarding”, with highlights including clerkships, a criminal court session, and attending a court case involving sailboats used in the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race.

“Law school teaches you how to think differently. Additionally, earning my degree in Australia has broadened my perspective, allowing me to bring a well-rounded international viewpoint to global organizations.”

Fifteen years later, Kamaka is now the Senior Vice President of US Managed Services at Consilio, a legal consultancy.

“My day usually starts around 7.00am to align with team members in the US, Canada, and India. I often present to executives, senior leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders on various initiatives, programs, client feedback, systemic issues, challenges, and successes.”

On top of this, Kamaka also runs her own small business, Better Insight Consulting, where she provides “practical advice and coaching to new, seasoned and aspirational female leaders.”

“My advice for someone considering a degree at Melbourne Law School is to remain curious and embrace the global perspective and leadership skills that the program offers. The education you'll receive will teach you to think strategically, sharpen your problem-solving skills and enhance your ability to effectively process information -- skills that are invaluable in any career.”

Kamaka Martin stands and smiles at an event following a career announcement.
