How a scholarship helped Tom pursue a career in sports law
The Cybec Foundation Melbourne Law School Indigenous Scholarship provides a living allowance of $10,000 per year for Indigenous JD students experiencing disadvantaged circumstances.
“This award has been transformative for my academic journey and personal growth,” Tom says. “The scholarship has significantly reduced financial pressure, allowing me to focus on my studies without the constant worry about educational expenses.”
Freed from financial stress, Tom is thriving academically and pursuing valuable professional opportunities that align with his career goals.
“A highlight of my year has been working as Head of Analysis and List Strategies for the Port Melbourne Football Club. This role has provided practical experience in the sporting industry.”
It’s within this industry that Tom hopes to build his career.
“The intersection of my legal studies and sports management experience has reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in AFL or sports law.”
When he’s not studying or interning, Tom enjoys spending time with family.
“On a personal level, living at home has strengthened my connection with my parents while my sister studies in the USA. I've also cherished weekly time spent caring for my two young nieces, which maintains important family bonds and cultural connections.”
Now in the third year of his JD, Tom is thinking about what’s on the horizon for him.
“Looking ahead, I plan to specialise in sports law and governance while continuing to excel academically. I aim to secure an internship with an AFL legal department to further develop my professional network in sports law.”
For Tom, the scholarship represents more than just financial assistance: “it represents belief in my potential and the value of Indigenous representation in the legal profession.”
“Thank you for investing in my education and in the broader goal of creating more diverse and inclusive legal communities.”
