Former IBAC Commissioner to speak at MLS on executive accountability

Former commissioner of Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) The Hon. Robert Redlich AM KC will speak at Melbourne Law School on centralisations of ministerial power and declines in ministerial accountability.

The Hon. Robert Redlich’s October 23 lecture ‘The changing form of the Executive branch of Government and declining accountability’ will explore how changed environments across executive government have accompanied a distancing from governance conventions, codes of conduct and due processes that have previously existed to serve public interest.

He will examine a growth in influence of ministerial advisers and a marginalisation of the public service, arguing government’s willingness to address deterioration in these standards have usually depended upon public exposure of these failings and that capacity to inform the public remains an essential function of an effective integrity commission.

The former justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, member of its Court of Appeal and Victorian Bar president headed IBAC as commissioner for his entire five-year term from 2018 to 2022.

This lecture forms part of Melbourne Law School’s Seabrook Chambers Public Lecture series; an annual lecture established by former Judges of the Accident Compensation Tribunal in the State of Victoria.

This series invites internationally renowned guests to speak on issues relating to the rule of

law in Australia and around the world.
