Gillian Triggs awarded Companion of the Order of Australia

Congratulations Gillian

Melbourne Law School Professorial Fellow, UoM Vice-Chancellors Fellow, barrister, former President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Melbourne Law School alumnus, Gillian Triggs was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia last week.

The highest of four levels of recognition within the civil division of the Order of Australia, the award recognises her eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or humanity at large.

Professor Triggs joins us at Melbourne Law School in 2025 teaching the International Human Rights Law subject in the Melbourne Law Masters program.

The honour, she says, is “at least indirectly, a recognition of the role of the Australian Human Rights Commission (and) the UN Refugee Agency” - organisations she has worked for since 2012.
