Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr. Monika Zalnieriute attends the World Conference of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) in Bangkok, Thailand, 28 November – 2 December, 2016. Dr. Zalnieriute is participating at the conference with a mission of laying foundations for more effective cooperation between academia and civil society and building alliances with LGBTI activists from around the world. The effective partnership between universities and NGOs is crucial for affecting social, political and legal changes and promoting equality of LGBT people worldwide.

ILGA is the world federation of national and local organisations dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people. It is an umbrella organisation of more than 1100 member organisations presented in six different regions including: Pan Africa Ilga, Ilga-Asia, Ilga-Europe, Ilga-LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), Ilga North-America andIlga-Oceania (Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia and Pacific Islands). Established in 1978, ILGA enjoys consultative status at the UN ECOSOC Council, publishes an annual world report and a map on legislation criminalising or protecting people on the basis of their sexual orientation or recognising their relationships.
