First Indigenous judge appointed to the Supreme Court of QLD
Indigenous barrister Lincoln Crowley QC has been appointed as a judge for the Supreme Court of Queensland. Mr Crowley QC, a descendant of the Warramunga peoples from the Northern Territory, is the first Indigenous appointment to the Supreme Court of Queensland. Mr Crowley QC specialises in criminal law, inquests and inquiries and related civil proceedings and litigation.
Mr Crowley QC is one of the very few Indigenous barristers across Australia, having worked as Crown Prosecutor for Sydney and Queensland offices, and having been the first Indigenous person in Queensland to be appointed as the Queens Counsel.
On the day that marks the Anniversary of the 1967 referendum, the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub are proud of Mr Crowley QC's achievement, which is a significant example of the systematic change that needs to occur for the legal system to begin to become fair and just for Indigenous people. The appointment of Mr Crowley QC is a small step forward towards breaking barriers for Indigenous people within the white settler legal system.
