The Ian Malkin Centre for Legal Academic Skills is the hub for student support and resources relating to legal writing, legal research and study skills.
About the Centre
We have a virtual presence by way of this website and we can be found in person if you come to our offices on the third floor of the Law Library - come through the main entrance and look to your right for the glassed-in area with the sign Ian Malkin Centre for Legal Academic Skills.
Our team
Dr Chantal Morton is the Associate Professor in Legal Writing and Academic Skills. She conducts workshops, tutorials and individual consultations designed to help JD, MLM and GRD students improve their writing and academic skills.
Kirsty Wilson is the Legal Research Skills Advisor and offers individual and group training in legal research skills to JD and GRD students.
Natalie Wieland runs workshops on legal research for students in the MLM program.
Programs
The Centre runs several programs designed to facilitate your professional and academic development with respect to study, research and writing skills.
We run workshops for JD students on:
- legal research and writing;
- study skills;
- professionalism;
- teamwork skills; and
- a bootcamp for practice skills before you graduate.
We run workshops for MLM students on:
- the fundamentals of legal research and writing for students from civil-law and non-law backgrounds;
- advanced legal research; and
- advanced legal writing clinics.
We run workshops for GRD students on:
- planning and structuring a dissertation; and
- editing a dissertation.
