Irmgard Hanner
Irmgard Hanner was born in Dresden, Germany, in June 1930. A Jewish woman, she came to Australia as a stateless refugee after having survived the Holocaust, and she was made an Australian citizen five years after arriving.
She said that being stateless “didn’t affect me, really”, but that she “didn't want to be German. I didn't want to be German. Let's put it that way. I didn't want to be German, quite honestly.”
Irmgard Hanner was interviewed for the National Library of Australia oral history collection. Her interview and transcript can be access through their website.
