Judith Solomon
Judith Solomon is a Jewish woman who was born in Budapest in 1942. She and her parents left Hungary when she was about two years old, after her family was able to organise papers to help them escape. They first lived in a Displaced Persons camp, and then eventually made their way to Israel where they lived for nearly 10 years before migrating to Australia.
Judith described her Australian citizenship ceremony, saying that “it was wonderful. Such a lovely feeling. Now I’m an Australian. I’m accepted. Except for me, I was not accepting yet, but I was accepted in Australia. That was very meaningful then, really. I still felt that I didn’t belong, even though I had some friends. I had only been here two years. I was still madly writing letters to my friends in Israel who were coming and going. I missed that.… I wasn’t comfortable yet here. It was awkward teenage years. It was awful when I first came here. But I remember the ceremony very clearly. It was lovely.”
